Ready to Turn Simple Recipes into Powerful Learning to Read Tools?
This unique method combines the joy of cooking with the power of reading, making learning an engaging and practical experience for your child.

“I have heard baking is great for my kids learning but... my child cannot read a recipe and I seem to be doing all of the work whilst they ‘help’?”
How many hours have you spent googling to help your early reader try to find a fun solution, only to be left confused by all the jargon and a Pinterest board filled with activities you will try next week?

We all know learning to read is a big step and I know you’ve already been doing phonics activities with them, trying books with them and any games you can find. And if they are not quite at the reading stage yet I bet you have to be researching where and when to start.

But I am here to help make reading practice in be more purposeful by using recipes.

Even if…

Your child is in the early stages of reading or they are struggling with learning to read

You are confused by all the different ways and things that go into learning to read

You haven’t tried any cooking with them before

Family life is busy (recipes can always be outsourced to another adult … hello activity to do with Nanna)

Finally, get your beginner reader actually using recipes whilst you step back and supervise!
This is all possible.
And it’s why I created the
Reading Made Delicious Recipe Kit.

What makes these recipes so special?

So what is the
Reading Made Delicious
Recipe Kit?
It’s not just a collection of recipes you can try with your child. But a powerful way to make reading practice purposeful and help set kids up with cooking skills.

Plus as you will see inside, there are SOOO many other learning opportunities hidden in each activity.

Here's a peek at what's included inside the recipe kit:
16 Visual Decodable Recipes

16 beautifully designed, easy-to-follow recipes that are perfect for young readers.

These recipes are crafted to build your child's reading skills step-by-step while they enjoy making and tasting their culinary creations.

And who doesn't like bonuses?

Mini Reading Assesment

A quick (less than 5 minutes) assessment you can do with your child so that you can get started with the recipes at the best-fit level for your child. Each recipe has 3 levels to help your reader grow.

Road to Star Baker Success Map
This breaks down the steps and milestones to take with your child to get them to use recipes and cooking.

Phonics Quickstart Guide
Phonics is a big part of learning to read, yet it can be confusing. This bonus will help you understand phonics a bit better and use the recipes even more.

'We're loving your recipes and my little one loved the independence'
-Debra

'We have tried out the sugar cookie recipe it was great. I like that we can keep the recipes so similar each time which makes them easier to follow'.

-Alison S

‘I was looking for ways to help my granddaughters to read. A path of “reading as we cook/bake with MiMi” is a brilliant idea. I was in need of a way to incorporate reading while doing something fun vs. being “boring”. We love to cook and bake together.’
-Rachel G.

In case we haven't met yet.... I'm Sarah

Can I be honest with you? I got into Visual Recipes for Early Readers first when I was an Early Years Classroom teacher looking for a way to make cooking with my students more manageable and for them actually be able to follow a recipe. I then took it to a whole new level when I was helping my own child with learning to read as it made it fun and purposeful.

But then I started to notice that it also really helped me out as a mum feeling like I was doing enough with the activities we were sharing together.

So I went all in and created a signature picture recipe method with multiple reading levels to support children with purposeful reading skills and develop functional life skills at the same time.

A year later, we have tried out many recipes and perfected how early readers (either just starting out or who are struggling with reading) can truly access recipes. Previously beginner readers would just need to be told what to do in the kitchen or follow a recipe completely in pictures and not have any opportunity to use their growing reading skills in an authentic way.

And now? I want the same for you.

That’s why I created Reading Made Delicious and the Read-to-cook method. And why I have spent over a year perfecting the method with a real-life early reader!

Let’s do this!

How to know if the recipe kit is for you right now
You should definitely get the kit if…

  • You have a child learning to read (approx age 4-8 years old)
  •  You want a way to make reading practice fun and purposeful
  •  You want to get your child cooking
  •  You are looking for resources that cover a whole load of skills at once
  • You want a purposeful reading activity you could outsource to *insert responsible adult here*

You might want to wait to get the kit if…

  • Your child is not able to point to pictures and follow some simple instructions
  • You want to leave your child to just get on with cooking from day one (*this MAY be possible with an older child who has had some experience in the kitchen and it more proficient at reading)
  • You don’t want your child touching knives or graters…

You may have questions...
  • I am not sure if my child is at the right stage of reading for this?
The recipes are designed for absolute beginners through to more established readers. The beginners will need support to ensure they are using sounds accurately and also for you take use the teachable moments to grow their reading.

Step one is a simple assessment. Even if your child is a competent reader, they can still benefit from the structured recipe system and use this to easily develop their cooking skills with simple recipes. So many recipes out there for 'kids' still require extensive adult support.

  • Family life is ALWAYS busy. When will we have time to fit this in?
Congratulations if you have managed to sneak a moment to get to this point. Gold star if you did it without being interrupted by a child asking for snacks.

I get it. It has taken me days to get this written up, simply because of family life.

But reading practice is one of those things I know you will be prioritizing with your kids. We all want our kids to be confident fluent readers.

Whilst using a recipe will take longer than reading practice in a book, it is actually more efficient for families. This is because of all of the other skills used at the same time.

AND… you don’t necessarily by the adult that they do the recipes with. This is a great opportunity for grandparents, other relatives or adults to step in. The goal is the learning process and not perfection. So you could outsource this to nanna and not have to spend time finding activities for them to do together. Oh and you may even get a cookie to eat with your cup of tea at the end of it!
  • How do the recipes actually work?
Each recipe comes in three different reading levels. They are visual recipes so use a combination of pictures and carefully selected words based on my extensive time working with and listening to early readers (I spent over 2000 hours working 1:1 as an online reading tutor and 5 years as a primary classroom teacher).

Perfecting phonics for readers who know a few sounds and are working on blending simple cvc words together. Victorious with Vowels for readers who are working on digraphs and fabulously fluent are readers who are securing their phonics knowledge. Oops sorry if that got a bit teacher talk for you there but this is designed to make learning to read effective and purposeful.

On top of all of that each one I test on my own early reader. And anyone who has worked with their own child will know how honest they are if they actually work….
  • But I am not a teacher. How can I use these recipes to help my child with learning to read?
I have poured hours and hours into creating this method from my time using them in the classroom with reception children (I found one of my original ones recently and wow they have come a long way!) to the time we spend creating them in my own kitchen. Not to mention the hours I have spent listening to children read and teaching daily phonics lessons.

I have taken all this and packaged it up into a recipe you can grab and go with. I colour code sounds to look out for, use the same format each time to make them easy to follow and include adult guidance for each one.

Inside the kit there is also support for helping your child’s reading AND how you can use the recipes.

The goal of them is to take your child from beginner baker to star baker and you to support rather than do all the work.

The recipes do most of the teaching. You are the facilitator who is there to support, teach in the moment when you see fit, get covered in flour and maybe eat something at the end of it.
  • Do you offer refunds?
As this is an instant access digital product in short, no.
  • Point blank. I'm wondering how this can actually deliver.
Like I mentioned a few sections above, using visual recipes for learning to read completely changed how we have been able to approach reading at home. When I realized I could squeeze so much authentic learning into one activity I was hooked.

I know not everyone is going to be cooking every week like we often are. But I want everyone in on this visual recipe thing. Reading NEEDS to have a purpose. I have packed as much value into the recipe club as possible so you can't help but say "why not try it?"

I know you want to be getting your kids reading and you want to do it with purpose.

Inside you'll find support to work on what recipe level to start your child with, 16 recipes in an easy-to-download ebook, and a road-to-star baker map to follow along with other bonuses.
  • I hate cooking but want my child to cook. Can the Recipe Kit help me?
Not being a whiz at cooking yourself should never be -- and never needs to be -- a reason to not start cooking or baking with your child.

The recipes in the kit are fairly simple and kid tested. Including having a younger sibling needing attention whilst supporting the older one #mumlife. They will also be delivered to you in an order that builds confidence in the kitchen.

I know that cooking takes a bit more time and mess than other activities. But what other activity can use all five senses, use functional life skills and creates memories in the kitchen.

It’s also a great activity for grandparents or other adults to take a lead on and your reading practice is ticked off at the same time.

I’m here to guide you and save you a boatload of time when you get the Reading Made Delicious Recipe Kit...even if you’ve never had your child follow a written instruction before!
  • Do I need to get anything else?
This is a digital product so you will need to either print the recipes out or display them on a tablet. I personally use a tablet so we can zoom in on words (and I save on printing!)

Oh and of course you will need the ingredients for each recipe. This is NOT a meal subscription.
  • You keep saying families, I am a teacher or tutor and this would be great for my students. Can I join?
Absolutely. The recipes originally came from the classroom. You may find that the classroom kit meets your needs better. Inside this version of the kit there is more support for using with bigger groups but also with limited kitchen access.

If you not sure which one to go for, drop me an email at hello@readingmadedelicious.com and I can help you.
  • This seems like it designed for children in the UK. Would it work for me if I am based somewhere else?
Learning to read is approached slightly differently from country to country. However, these recipes do not focus on following a specific phonics or reading program but a way of applying early reading skills. All recipes are in English.

So it does not matter if you are joining from the US, Australia or anywhere else the recipes are there for your early reader to give it a go and get in the kitchen which is an universal way of making memories as a family.

Some of the Phonics Quickstart guide and reading notes on the recipes are slightly more focused on UK terms when it comes to reading. But having supported readers globally, these are not big differences and do not affect the recipes in any way.

Following feedback, I have also made sure each recipe has temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celcius and also included ingredient terms in US and UK English as this was a bigger stumbling point!
  • I still am unsure whether this will work for my family
If you have specific questions about the recipe club and how it can work for your family drop me an email at hello@readingmadedelicious.com or a DM on Instagram @reading_made_delicious
